Hi, I'm Javi— a design strategist with a deep passion for design research.

Over the past six years, I've focused my career on healthcare design, working to identify the challenges faced by patients, caregivers, and clinical teams within the complexities of cancer care. I've also had the opportunity to explore training design and develop educational models to empower hospital staff in building their design and innovation capabilities.

When I moved to New York, I came with a clear vision: to become a design expert in the healthcare field. My first-hand experience as a caregiver opened my eyes to the powerful role design can play in alleviating the burdens of treatment for patients and their loved ones. While I recognize that I can't solve every challenge I care about, I am committed to creating more holistic, supportive experiences that reassure those facing difficult times.

Design Strategy

Guided leadership teams in aligning their vision and business goals with user needs while balancing human-centered design with systems thinking. Encouraged discussions on how design can create value for the organization and its community—patients, caregivers, and clinical teams—by seamlessly integrating creative interventions and functional elements with strategic objectives.

Design Research

Led and facilitated discovery, synthesis, and prototyping processes using a range of design research tools and methodologies. Skilled in qualitative research, including data collection through observation, interviews, and interactive activities.

Facilitation

Planned and moderated a variety of successful workshops, including Death Over Dinner, the PFACQ Symposium, the Digital Tech Hackathon, and the NYC Service Design Network, among others. I use creative engagement techniques to encourage active participation and collaboration, whether in remote or in-person settings.

Culture

Dedicated time and space to nurture team relationships and foster growth. I’ve explored initiatives that strengthen team culture and drive collaboration. On a larger scale, I've led projects to boost institutional morale during the COVID-19 pandemic, cultivate a culture of innovation, and more. I am committed to intentionally and proactively shaping a positive culture, knowing that the right environment can have a lasting impact on both individuals and the organization.
